Town Brook Enhancement Project

Quincy Center Redevelopment
Quincy, MA

In July 2010, Stephenson Design Group (SDG) and Lucas Environmental (LE) were awarded a contract with Hancock Adams Associates to provide engineering and permitting services for the proposed re-alignment and enhancement of Town Brook through Quincy Center. The Town Brook Enhancement Project proposes to re-align Town Brook through the City of Quincy’s Urban Revitalization District (URD), providing significant environmental and flood control enhancements to the Brook, while enabling the implementation of the URD. The project will involve the installation of approximately 1,200 linear feet of reinforced concrete culvert and open channel sections with design features that will include: flood control, hydraulic conveyance of Town Brook and habitat enhancements associated with the spawning of rainbow smelt in the Brook.

The project will involve significant coordination with the extensive utility infrastructure and Roadway improvements that will be on-going to prepare for and facilitate the construction of the City of Quincy’s vision for the URD. The construction of the URD has been in the planning stages for decades and is a $1.2 billion private/ public redevelopment that will restore Quincy Center into a vibrant, exciting place to live, work and shop. Wide sidewalks, street level dining and shopping, new apartments and condominiums, and attractive structured parking with public open spaces weaved into the historic assets are planned to create an attractive regional destination and desirable location to live.

The initial stages of the Town Brook Enhancement project will include the preparation of an Environmental Notification Form (ENF) to be filed under the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) followed by permitting with the Quincy Conservation Commission, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Project (DEP), Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
